One of the biggest questions I get from couples is, "Where should we take our engagement photos?"

The good news is that lower peninsula of Michigan has no shortage of beautiful locations. Whether you are looking for gardens, beaches, forests, city views, or college campuses, there are plenty of great options for engagement photos. As a Michigan engagement photographer, I've photographed couples all over the state, and these are some of my favorite locations for engagement sessions.

Dow Gardens

Dow Gardens is easily one of the most popular engagement photo locations in Mid-Michigan, and for good reason.

The gardens offer a huge variety of backdrops throughout the year. Spring and summer bring colorful flowers and greenery, while fall creates beautiful golden tones throughout the property. There are winding paths, bridges, wooded areas, and open spaces that give couples a lot of variety without having to travel between locations.

One of my favorite things about Dow Gardens is that no two sessions ever feel exactly the same. Depending on the season and where we explore, every engagement session has its own unique look.

Chippewa Nature Center

If you're looking for a more natural setting, Chippewa Nature Center is one of my favorite places for engagement photos.

The trails, fields, and wooded areas create a relaxed atmosphere that works especially well for couples who love spending time outdoors. During the fall, the colors are incredible. During the summer, the tall grass and greenery create beautiful backgrounds for photos.

Chippewa Nature Center also tends to be a little quieter than some other locations, making it a great option for couples who want a more private engagement session.

Woldumar Nature Center

Located in Lansing, Woldumar Nature Center offers a mix of wooded trails, open fields, and river views.

This location is perfect for couples who want engagement photos that feel natural and adventurous. There are plenty of different routes to explore, which helps create variety throughout the session without needing to drive to multiple locations.

Woldumar is especially beautiful during the fall months when the leaves begin changing colors.

Harsen's Island

For couples looking for something a little different, Harsen's Island is a hidden gem off the East coast.

The waterfront views, open skies, and relaxed atmosphere make it a great location for engagement photos. It feels peaceful and removed from the busier parts of Michigan while still offering beautiful scenery.

Sunset sessions here could be especially stunning, with warm light reflecting off the water and creating a romantic backdrop.

Michigan State University Campus

MSU's campus offers one of the most versatile locations for engagement photos in the Lansing area.

The campus has beautiful architecture, tree-lined walkways, gardens, and open green spaces. Whether you're alumni, current students, or simply love the campus atmosphere, there are plenty of great spots for engagement photos.

The changing seasons also give the campus a completely different look throughout the year, making it a great option no matter when your engagement session takes place.

Detroit

Detroit offers something completely different from the other locations on this list.

For couples who love city vibes, Detroit provides incredible variety. From skyline views and historic architecture to waterfront locations and modern city streets, there are endless possibilities for engagement photos.

Whether you want something elegant, urban, romantic, or adventurous, Detroit has a location that fits your vision. It's one of my favorite places to photograph couples because every session can be completely customized to match their personalities.

Bay City State Park

Bay City State Park is one of the most underrated engagement photo locations in Michigan.

The park offers beach access, wooded trails, and beautiful sunset views all in one location. Because there are several different environments within the park, couples can get a lot of variety during a single session.

It's especially beautiful during golden hour when the sunlight filters through the trees and reflects off the water. Whether you're planning engagement photos, couples photos, or even family photos, Bay City State Park is always a solid choice.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Engagement Photos

At the end of the day, the best engagement photo location is the one that feels most like you.

Some couples love gardens and flowers. Others prefer beaches, forests, or city skylines. The location should help tell your story and reflect your personalities as a couple.

If you're planning engagement photos and aren't sure where to go, I'd be happy to help. After photographing engagement sessions across Michigan, I can recommend locations based on the style, season, and overall look you're hoping to achieve.

Looking for a Michigan engagement photographer? I'd love to help capture this exciting season of your life.
