Detroit Lighthouse Proposal | Melissa & Nathan

One of my favorite proposals I've photographed took place at the lighthouse in Detroit's Milliken State Park.

Nathan reached out to me while planning a surprise proposal for Melissa, and together we worked out the details to make sure everything went smoothly. The location couldn't have been more perfect with the Detroit River, the lighthouse, and the Windsor skyline in the background, it created an incredible setting for Nathan & Melissa's big moment.

As with most surprise proposals, the biggest challenge was keeping everything a secret. Melissa had no idea what was about to happen. (More on that below).

When the moment finally arrived, Nathan got down on one knee in front of the lighthouse and asked Melissa to marry him. Thankfully she said yes.

The Photographer Behind the Scenes

One thing most people don't realize about surprise proposals is that the photographer usually arrives long before the couple does.

While I was waiting for Melissa and Nathan to arrive, I found a spot near the lighthouse, checked my camera settings, and tried to blend in with everyone else enjoying the riverfront. At one point, I was sitting there eating a banana while keeping an eye out for them, which makes for some pretty funny behind-the-scenes photos.

Since Melissa had never met me before, staying unnoticed was part of the job. The goal is always for the proposal to feel completely natural so I can capture the moment as it happens.

Why Milliken State Park Is Great for Proposals

If you're considering a surprise proposal in Detroit, Milliken State Park is one of my favorite locations.

The lighthouse is unique, the riverfront provides beautiful views, and there are plenty of places for a photographer to stay hidden until the proposal happens. It's also a location that feels special without being overly crowded.

Whether you're planning something simple or something elaborate, the area offers a lot of flexibility.

Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal

If you're thinking about proposing, here are a few quick tips:

• Have a plan, but be flexible.

• Choose a meaningful location.

• Coordinate with your photographer beforehand.

• Don't worry about making everything perfect. The emotions are what matter most.

A Little Life Update

One of the coolest parts of this job is getting to watch couples continue their story after the proposal.

Since this session, Melissa and Nathan are expecting a child, traveled through Europe, and even chose to elope overseas. While I wasn't the photographer for their elopement, it's been fun seeing where life has taken them since that day at the lighthouse.

Every proposal marks the beginning of a new chapter, and Melissa and Nathan's story is a perfect example of that.
