Why I'm Always Hoping for Snow

I'll be honest. I love snow.

So much so that my husband and I got married in February because we were hoping for snowy wedding photos.

There is just something about fresh snowfall that makes photos feel extra special. The snow reflects light beautifully, creates a clean backdrop, and makes even familiar locations look completely different.

Every time I see snow in the forecast before a session, I get excited. Some of my favorite engagement and wedding photos have happened while snowflakes were falling, and it's one of the reasons I think winter sessions deserve more love.

Why Winter Engagement Photos Are Worth It

Winter often gets overlooked when couples are choosing a date for engagement photos, but it offers several advantages.

Snow-covered landscapes create a clean, timeless backdrop that helps couples stand out in their photos. Popular parks and locations are usually much less crowded than they are during spring and fall. Plus, winter sessions tend to feel more intimate since couples naturally stay close together to keep warm.

Some of my favorite winter engagement and couples sessions have taken place during the colder months, including sessions at Dow Gardens, Chippewa Nature Center, Detroit, and even snowy wedding portraits in Frankenmuth and Bay City.

What Should You Wear for Winter Engagement Photos?

One of the biggest concerns couples have is figuring out what to wear.

The good news is that winter clothing often photographs beautifully.

Some of my favorite winter outfit choices include:

• Neutral-colored sweaters

• Long coats

• Scarves

• Boots

• Layered outfits

• Earth tones and jewel tones

Cream, tan, gray, burgundy, forest green, navy, and camel colors tend to photograph especially well against snowy backgrounds.

If you're planning to wear a dress, consider bringing a warm coat to wear between photos.

Staying Warm During Your Session

You don't need to spend an hour freezing outside to get beautiful winter engagement photos.

I always encourage couples to dress warmer than they think they'll need. Hand warmers, extra layers, and warm boots can make a huge difference.

Many winter sessions involve short walks between photo locations and plenty of movement to help keep everyone comfortable. We can also take breaks whenever needed.

Most couples are surprised by how quickly the session goes once we get started.

Fresh snowfall creates some of the most romantic photos Michigan has to offer. The soft white background helps keep attention on the couple while adding a magical feel to the images.

One of my favorite examples happened during Carah and Brady's wedding portraits. Just as we arrived at Wenonah Park, snow began falling around us and created the perfect winter backdrop.

Those are the moments couples remember forever.

The walking paths, bridges, and landscaping create beautiful winter scenery while still offering plenty of variety.

Chippewa Nature Center

Snow-covered trails and natural surroundings make this one of my favorite winter locations.

Detroit

Downtown Detroit offers a completely different winter look with city lights, architecture, and riverfront views.

Woldumar Nature Center

The setting for Emma and Ali's proposal, Woldumar provides beautiful wooded areas that look incredible year round with all the evergreen trees.

Don't Worry About Perfect Weather

One thing I've learned from photographing Michigan couples is that weather forecasts aren't always accurate.

Some of the best winter photos happen when conditions aren't perfect. Cloudy skies often create soft lighting that photographers love, and light snowfall can add something special that simply can't be recreated.

Instead of worrying about perfect weather, focus on enjoying the experience together.
