If you've ever asked me for location recommendations in Mid-Michigan, there's a good chance Bay City State Park made the list.

Over the years, I've photographed couples, families, engagement sessions, and even an elopement here. It's one of my favorite locations because it offers so much variety without requiring us to travel between multiple spots.

Why I Love Bay City State Park

Some photo locations are beautiful, but only offer one look.

Bay City State Park is different.

Within a short walk, you can find sandy beaches, wooded trails, tall grasses, open fields, and waterfront views. That means your gallery can have several completely different backdrops while staying in one location.

It's also easy to access, offers plenty of parking, and rarely feels overcrowded compared to some of Michigan's more popular photo locations.

Beach Photos Along the Waterfront

When most people think of Bay City State Park, they immediately think of the beach.

The shoreline provides a clean, timeless backdrop that works beautifully for couples, families, and engagement sessions. Whether you're walking along the water, sitting in the sand, or watching the sunset over the bay, the beach area creates a relaxed atmosphere that photographs beautifully.

One of my favorite things about the waterfront is how different it can look throughout the year. Every session feels a little unique depending on the weather, season, and lighting.

Wooded Trails and Natural Backdrops

One of the most overlooked parts of Bay City State Park is the trail system.

The wooded areas provide a completely different look from the beach and are perfect for couples or families who prefer a more natural setting. The trees offer shade during summer sessions and beautiful color during the fall months.

When clients tell me they want variety in their photos, this is one of the first places I bring them.

One of the Best Places for Sunset Photos

If your schedule allows it, I always recommend planning your session close to sunset.

Bay City State Park consistently provides some of the best sunset opportunities in the area. The open waterfront views allow the light to reflect across the bay, creating warm colors and beautiful skies that make for incredible photos.
