How to Pose Naturally During Engagement Photos

One of the biggest things I hear before an engagement session is:
"We're awkward in front of the camera."
I promise, you're not.
Almost every couple says this, and by the end of the session they're laughing, running around, and forgetting I'm even there.
The secret isn't knowing how to pose. It's focusing on each other instead of the camera.
Here are some of my favorite prompts that help create natural engagement photos.
Pretend You're in a Nicholas Sparks Movie
Yes, I'm serious.
Picture your favorite romantic movie. You're finally seeing each other after months apart.
Run toward each other.
Wrap each other in a big hug.
Spin around.
Laugh.
Those first few seconds usually create some of the biggest smiles of the entire session.
Act Like You Haven't Seen Each Other in Five Months
Think about how excited you'd be if your fiancé came home after months away.
Walk toward each other like it's your first reunion.
Those hugs always feel genuine because you're not thinking about posing anymore. You're simply reacting.
The Kiss Attack
One of my favorite prompts is what I call the "kiss attack."
One person tries to kiss the other while the other playfully dodges them.
Eventually they give in, and everyone starts laughing.
The photos always end up feeling playful instead of overly posed.
Whisper Something Funny
This works every single time.
I tell one person to whisper something into the other's ear.
It can be funny.
It can be embarrassing.
It can be completely random.
Whatever it is, the reactions are almost always genuine.
I've heard everything from inside jokes to Taco Bell orders.
The laughter that follows is impossible to fake.
Give Them a Big Bear Hug
Sometimes the simplest prompts create the best photos.
Wrap your arms around each other.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath.
Forget I'm standing there with a camera.
Those quiet moments often become some of my favorite images from the session.
Take in the Scenery Together
Not every photo needs to be looking at the camera.
Sometimes I'll simply ask you to stop, look out over the water, watch the sunset, or admire the scenery together.
Those moments help tell the story of where you were, not just what you looked like.
Piggyback Ride
If you're up for a little adventure, piggyback rides are always fun.
They're playful, full of movement, and usually end with lots of laughter.
Don't worry if it feels a little goofy. That's kind of the point.
Whisper... or Bite Their Ear
Every couple has a different sense of humor.
Sometimes I'll tell someone to whisper something sweet.
Other times I'll jokingly say, "Or just bite their ear."
The reaction is always priceless because nobody expects it.
Whether you actually whisper or choose the second option, the goal is simply to make each other laugh.
Grab the Booty and Lift
Okay... this one gets some laughs.
If you're comfortable with it, have one person grab the other's booty, pull them in close, and lift them off the ground.
It's playful, romantic, and almost always gets genuine smiles because you're too busy laughing to think about posing.
Bonus points if you both start laughing halfway through.
Tickle Fight
Need instant smiles?
Start a tickle fight.
You don't have to commit to a full wrestling match. Just enough to get each other laughing.
Some of my favorite candid photos happen during these little moments.
Walk Together
Walking is one of the easiest ways to make photos feel natural.
Hold hands.
Talk about your wedding.
Tell each other a funny story.
Bump shoulders.
Swing your hands.
The conversation becomes the focus, and the photos happen naturally.
Forget I'm Even There
This is probably the biggest piece of advice I give every couple.
Don't worry about where I'm standing.
Don't worry about the camera.
Don't wonder if you're doing it right.
Just spend time together.
Some of the best photos happen when couples completely forget they're being photographed.
Trust the Process
You don't need modeling experience to have beautiful engagement photos.
In fact, I don't expect you to know what to do at all.
That's my job.
I'll guide you through prompts, movement, and little moments that feel natural instead of stiff. Before long, you'll stop thinking about posing and start focusing on each other.
That's when the magic happens.
Planning Your Engagement Photos?
Whether you're outgoing, shy, goofy, or convinced you're "awkward in front of the camera," I promise we'll create photos that feel like you.
My goal isn't to force perfect poses. It's to create genuine moments you'll love looking back on for years to come.
